“Helping people grow a hedge
at the top of their cliff”
Healing mental health with Horticulture
Mental illness is common and can severely impact on people’s lives.
Recent NZ research found that: almost one-third of people in New Zealand have a personal experience of mental distress.
Loneliness is also a major issue, especially amongst our seniors.
Healing Horticulture is the title given to a very basic horticulture course designed as a vehicle to help interact with people especially those who are currently going through tough times mentally.
Whilst there is a need to provide urgent help for those who have ‘fallen off the cliff’, my concern is for those who are in the early throws of a struggle – who is helping them? ie. Early Intervention.
My vision is to help those struggling with mental health issues to grow a solid hedge at the top of their cliff, to give them a lift to support them through their current crisis.
From my personal experience in the classroom with adults, group participation offers incredible mental health and wellbeing facilitation opportunities. Courses are kept small and personal, 15-20 people max per course.
Healing Horticulture incorporates the Hauora of Māori health and wellbeing.
